1st District of Big Island

The Big Island of Hawaii is divided into nine districts, each with its own unique geography, culture, and attractions.

Puna

The Puna District is located on the southeastern coast of the Big Island of Hawaii and is known for its diverse landscapes, volcanic activity, and unique communities.

Here’s an overview of some of the key features and attractions in the Puna District:

  • Volcanic Landscapes: Puna is home to some of the most active volcanic areas on the Big Island, including parts of Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. Visitors can explore otherworldly landscapes shaped by volcanic eruptions, such as lava fields, steam vents, and volcanic craters.
  • Kapoho Tide Pools: The Kapoho Tide Pools are a series of natural volcanic tide pools located along the coastline of Puna. Visitors can snorkel and swim in the crystal-clear waters, which are home to a diverse array of marine life, including colorful fish, sea turtles, and coral reefs. Unfortunately, the Tide pools were destroyed by the Kilauea Eruption year 2018.
  • Pahoa Town: Pahoa is the largest town in the Puna District and is known for its eclectic atmosphere, historic buildings, and vibrant arts scene. Visitors can explore charming boutiques, galleries, and restaurants housed in historic plantation-era buildings, or attend community events and festivals.

  • Kapoho Kalapana Road (Red Road): This scenic coastal road runs along the southeastern coast of the Puna District and offers stunning views of the ocean, lava cliffs, and lush rainforests. Visitors can drive or bike along the Red Road, stopping at scenic overlooks and beaches along the way.

  • Warm Ponds: Puna was home to several natural geothermal hot ponds where visitors could relax and soak in warm mineral-rich waters. This was a popular destination known as Ahalanui Park, which featured a large pond heated by underground volcanic activity. Although just a memory following the 2018 Kilauea eruption, many locals fondly remember their times here.
